Deliveries of the upcoming iPhone 14 may be delayed. Rising tensions between China and Taiwan are to blame

When Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last week, it marked a significant increase in tensions between China and Taiwan, which resulted in military exercises near the island’s territory, a cooling of relations with the US, but also the beginning of sanctions and new rules that also have a direct impact on the smartphone market.

As Bloomberg reports, in recent days China has tightened the rules for transporting goods between the island and the mainland and requires new labeling during transport. Goods made in Taiwan should be newly labeled “Country of origin: Taiwan, China”, or Chinese Taipei. It considers these names of the country as the only correct ones under its one-China policy. Goods with a different label may be delayed or seized by customs and fines may be imposed on the manufacturer. According to the PhoneArena server, they can reach up to 4,000 yuan (CZK 16,000) for a mislabeled shipment.

Chinese iPhones delayed, Indian iPhones on time?According to Bloomberg sources, however, this is not a complete novelty. The regulation is said to have been in place since 2015, but only since last week has China started to stick to it more, which is becoming a problem for smartphone manufacturers, especially Apple. He is said to have already started to require suppliers to change these labels so that they are in line with the new rules.

This applies, for example, to TSMC, which manufactures iPhone chips for Apple. The company is due to launch the new iPhone 14 next month, and any delay in deliveries could have serious consequences for the company. Therefore, Apple began to push for greater diversification even more. As analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported on Twitter, this year, for the first time, the production of new iPhones in India started at the same time as in China.

Usually it happens that China is primary for Apple and only in the following quarters will it start covering production with factories from India, depending on demand. It is therefore a question of how Apple will manage to deal with these political problems and whether this will somehow affect the arrival of new iPhones on the market.
