The pool reopened briefly after closing as a pandemic precaution, but has been closed again for repairs since March. In a release on its website, the YWCA said the move comes after a “thorough review” that took into account increasing operational costs and required repairs, upgrades and maintenance. It found that overall usage of the pool has been steadily declining for years and that other services should take precedent. “Closing the pool was not an easy decision as it was a longstanding part of our organization’s offering for physical and mental well-being activities,” YWCA Saskatoon board president Jodi Manastyrski said. “But the need was greater to focus on the delivery of other crucial services for our clients.” The organization plans to repurpose the pool area as an employment and learning centre. It currently offers those services from a separate rental space in the city. YWCA Saskatoon CEO Cara Bahr said clients’ needs are changing and the organization is seeing a greater demand for those services. Plans for what the repurposing will look like are still preliminary; additions like crisis shelter and residence rooms are under consideration. The end result will hinge on fundraising. The YWCA said its fitness centre will remain open and upgrades are planned in the coming weeks. Advertisement 2 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
