Education Minister Resigns After Just 1 Month in Office

Education Minister Park Soon-ae resigned on Monday, just 35 days after taking office, over mounting public opposition to her plan to lower the school age from six to five. Park is the first Cabinet member of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration to step down. “I intend to step down as minister of education,” Park told reporters in a press conference. “I hoped to give back to the public the educational benefits I received, but I was not good enough.”She has been accused of trying to enforce the plan without consulting public opinion or sufficient preparation.   Education Minister Park Soon-ae (center) bows in a press conference in Seoul on Monday. /Newsis Park’s resignation comes shortly after Yoon promised reporters to “look at all issues from the public’s standpoint” and to “take necessary measures if needed” after returning from a five-day summer holiday. A Gallup Korea poll last week showed Yoon’s approval rating had sunk to a dismal 24 percent, raising calls for policy reforms. Yoon is resisting a full Cabinet reshuffle so far but will now have to appoint a new education minister as well as finally naming a health and welfare minister. He is also expected to replace some of his secretaries.  Copyright © Chosunilbo & Chosun.comRead More
